About
Materials Science and Engineering is a dynamic field poised on the cutting edge of the twenty-first century. At Worcester Polytechnic Institute, we believe that the future will not only depend on new materials but also on innovative using of traditional materials. Our commitment to the future shines through both in our multi-disciplinary focus and in our responsiveness to the needs of industry and the consumer.
Our ten-member Materials Science and Engineering faculty is large enough to include a diverse range of interests and experience, yet small enough to work as an integrated team. We work in a relaxed, informal, and friendly environment. And with only fifty graduate and undergraduate students in the Materials Science and Engineering program, our faculty members make sure that every student gets friendly, personal attention.
Our research at WPI ranges from developing and casting new aluminum alloys to electrospinning of biopolymers, from a cost analysis of fuel cells for APUs to the quenching of steel. No matter what aspect of materials science interests you, you are likely to find a faculty member and a student at WPI who share your interests.
WPI is the nation's third oldest private engineering college. Our small population of 2800 undergraduate students and 1200 full- and part-time graduate students help to insure the close contact with faculty that has become a hallmark of a WPI education.
In the pages that follow, you will learn who we are and what we do. You will visit our laboratories, meet our students, and see our campus. Please feel free to contact any member of the WPI Materials Science and Engineering program at any time if you need any further information.
